Helping a widow in need – Jane received basic items for her baby
Jane is a widow, who was raped and got impregnated accidently. She was admitted into a hospital about 10 km away from her home. She had the plan to commit abortion because she could not provide the needed care for the unwanted baby as she was poor. But finally she accepted the pregnancy. After she delivered the baby Charles and Rose, CCW staff members, took a long journey, more than 150 km, to assist her materially and comfort her spiritually.
Many Burundians face serious challenges to meet some of their most basic needs. Based on our Christian values we see it as an obligation to help the poor and distribute to them items like food, clothes or shoes.
Relevance:
Burundi experienced several armed conflicts that plunged the nation into a extreme poverty. 81,3% of the Burundian population live on less than 1,25$ a day (UNDP). Rated as one of the poorest countries in the world, where inflation for consumer products was estimated at 18.0% in 2012 (Worldbank), Burundi has a very fragile economy. Life becomes tougher for the poorest as prices for staple food and all basic commodities increase day by day.
